At around 5 p.m. on May 10, 2012, a severe disaster of hail, flood, and debris flow struck Min County, Gansu Province. More than 50 people were killed and over a dozen went missing. The economic loss was more than 7.6 billion yuan. The country activated a Level - 3 emergency rescue plan.
Upon receiving the news of the disaster in Gansu, the Lanzhou Blue Sky Rescue Team was activated immediately. It dispatched an investigation team to the disaster - stricken area. Six hours after the disaster occurred, they drove 280 kilometers and arrived at the scene. Then they carried out immediate rescue of the affected people and an investigation of the disaster - area information.
After the disaster, the headquarters of the Blue Sky Rescue Team has been closely monitoring the development of the disaster situation. Seeing that the local militias and troops were already in action, it decided not to dispatch a team to participate in the rescue for the time being and would make a decision on whether to deploy based on the investigation by the Lanzhou Blue Sky Rescue Team. After the investigation report came out, through analysis, it was found that this disaster had similarities to the Wenchuan earthquake. Many remote areas did not receive timely assistance, and there was a lot that the Blue Sky Rescue Team could do. As an emergency volunteer team in Beijing, it was necessary to carry forward the spirit of "when one place is in difficulty, assistance comes from all quarters" and actively participate in disaster relief to accumulate experience for possible major disasters in the future. Therefore, on the 15th, it was decided to launch a joint rescue operation, comprehensively coordinate the Blue Sky Rescue Team to initiate rescue nearby. Rescue teams from Beijing, Shanxi, Qinghai, Xining, and Nanchong in Sichuan were dispatched, while the Yushu team, Shandong team, and Shaanxi team served as reserves.
After communicating with the local disaster - relief headquarters, the local side replied that rescue and relief supplies were in urgent need.
Two people from Beijing, Yuanshan and Chaye, rushed to the disaster area with technical equipment and water - purification instruments. They met up with the Xining team and the Qinghai team in Lanzhou, stayed overnight there. The next day, they purchased supplies in Lanzhou and then headed for the disaster area. The Shanxi team and the Nanchong team traveled overnight and met up with the Beijing team and the Qinghai team at around 8 p.m. on the same day.
